Some of my favorite high school memories were at dances. From picking out the decorations to getting ready, I loved all of it. That being said, if there was one thing I could have consistently changed about almost all of them, it would be my hairstyle. I had such long, pretty hair, yet for some reason never even considered leaving it down. It would have been great to have a hairdresser steer me in a different direction. With that in mind, here are some tips to help you avoid prom hair regret.
- Match your dress. Don’t just pick a style you like. Look at how it will go with your dress. A general rule of thumb is to keep the hair simple if the dress is complicated to avoid overdoing it, while a simpler dress allows you more freedom with your hair. However, if you have a classic, Audrey Hepburn style dress, you may want to keep the hair simple as well and dress it up with accessories.
- Necklines are very important. A strapless dress is great because you can really do almost anything with your hair, whereas a high neckline is more restricting and usually requires an updo. If you’re looking to accentuate the low back of your dress and don’t want to put it up, go for a low side style.
- Be comfortable without being boring. Don’t go for some crazy style if you’re a jeans and t shirt kinda girl. Love ponytails? Go for a high, Adele style ponytail with lots of volume. Have crazy curly hair that you love to wear wild? Have your hairdresser blow it out and then recurl it. It will give you a look similar to what you’re used to without looking like you just rolled out of bed. You can step outside the box without abandoning it completely.
